"Old man in military costume", Rembrandt

i've been going to a monday group painting class for a couple of weeks now. this week, i made a more detailed pass on the face, repainted over the miscoloured feather. worked on the metal collar a bit. I'll work on the details of the feather this week at home.

this painting is challenging.

as a #colourblind artist... what I see, what colours I mix and what my teacher sees are totally different. in the original, the background is warmer than the greenish one I painted in, so I am told. i see it as warmish grey brown.

I'm working on a master study/copy of "Patroclus" by Jacques-Louis David now. I'm painting on canvas that I prepared by gessoing with a rough texture since the background of the origibal painting is a rocky background. I ragged a reddish color to start since the original has a lot of red tones. This afternoon, I transferred the image with charcoal and painted in the outlines and blocked in the darks with burnt umber. This painting is significantly larger than the last one. I'm aiming for late summer to early fall to complete it.
